Don't underestimate the inherent "exotic" appeal of foreign imports - What is considered standard to us may be percieved very differently abroad! Here is an example of a uniquely American product having success in an overseas market. This is an excerpt from the book courtesy of the book IMPORT/EXPORT - How to get started in International Trade, by Carl A. Nelson.

American products are very fashionable in France: Levis go for $80, Van's shoes for $100, Zippo lighters for $25, and so on. THe Harley Davidson Motorcycle is one of those very fashionable products. The price for a used Harley starts at$8000. One clever business woman started by buying used Harleys through the local city want ads at about $2000 to $3000 (depending on the model), and had a mechanic check them out. Her European import price was $3300 to $4500, with a retail price of $5700 to $7100. She sold 10 a month and was profitable in her first year.
