Thinking about importing a product in 2010 and beyond? Make sure that you focus your energy in the right places. While product knowledge and logistics management are important for success, it is essential to have a good grasp of the buying and selling markets for that product.

Some points to keep in mind:

 - Market Volatility - Be aware of variations - not only in your regional market, but the global marketplace as well. Paying even a little too much for merchandise can result in non-competitive pricing.

 - Quality Requirements and Standards - The consumer will ultimately define what level of quality is acceptable. We've all experienced cheap imports; if you always deal in quality, you'll be better off.

 - Product Seasonality - This is especially important when considering importing holiday or clothing items.   Plan far  enough ahead to avoid the potentially major pitfalls of being too late with a product!

 - Research Research and More Research - While organizations such as the International Trade Center can help you define objectives and get started on your market research, there is no substitute for hitting the street. Your customers will be your best source of information.
