I assume most people who read this blog have a great aptitude for all things international. And because lately news or studies tend to be limited in one way or another to the state of the economy and international impacts thereof, I would like to draw our attention to another factor that highly influences the communities we live in: growing cities. Cities can be the thriving poles and fast paced hubs that accelerate the development of entire regions. More and more areas of the world are becoming urban and with it the world’s population.  The developing world is experiencing the rise of global cities. The dynamics and results of this development spurred by globalization and urbanization are not only fascinating but can be very insightful.

In November 2008 Foreign Policy Magazine published an article about a new kind of Global Cities Index. Besides standard measurements of growth, education levels, quality of life etc. the study includes two new dimensions: cultural experience and political engagement. The article boasts with great visuals and quick access to relevant information that make it an easy read.

Highlights of the article include:
  • What defines a global city?
  • Who are the forerunners in employing environmentally sound practices?
  • Who is catching up and who is falling behind?
  • Who are the most influential mayors around the world?
I recommend this article to everybody interested in the ongoing formation of our interconnected world.
