Confession: I hardly ever read the Dallas Morning News. Every day, I make sure to check the WSJ and NYTimes, but unless I'm looking for a restaurant review, I miss the local news.

That's why I was pleasantly surprised when a friend passed along this article from Tuesday's DMN "Texas Should Take the Lead in Refocusing US Economy on Exports"

Here's an exerpt:

"Texas has been the leading exporting state for several years. When Texas exports fell, so did the Texas economy.Texas exports started to recover in April, but there's a long way to go. After 10 months of declines, U.S. imports rose in June.

Much of Texas' export market is in Mexico. But for the kind of change Summers is talking about, the state's export prowess will have to extend far and wide. "Its absolutely necessary, not just for the United States, but for the whole world" that the U.S. become an export-led economy, said Frank Vargo of the National Association of Manufacturers. "The global economic model where everybody exports to us and we consume all of it just won't work anymore."

One of the more annoying things about working in this field is the amount of scams that prey on the needs of small businesses. Like those late night infomercials that always advertise free government money. As long as we've worked here (a combined 25 years!) never seen a grant for small business!  Only the big co's get bailouts people!

Well something came in the mail yesterday for the Southern Dallas Business Plan Competiton on September 30, 2009. If you submit a winning business plan, you could get between $2-$4K in cash prizes...not a bad deal...happy writing!
